Orihime sighed and scrubbed furiously at her eyes, trying to erase the evidence of tears before anyone could see. She felt so ridiculous, crying because she’d been turned down by someone she liked, and… and–
Warm lips pressed against her temple and a hand settled on her shoulder. “Want me to kick someone in sensitive places for you?” asked a familiar, welcome voice.
A giggle escaped before she could help it and she shook her head, letting her hand drop away and giving Nelliel a faint smile. “N-no… it’s okay. He… I think I always knew he didn’t…? But… I had to try!”
Nelliel huffed and draped her arm over Orihime’s shoulder, pulling her into a tight hug. “Well if you ever change your mind, just let me know! I’m always up for being someone’s knight in shining armor,” she said with a grin and a wink.
“Th-thanks, Nelliel-san…” Orihime leaned into Nelliel’s warmth, enjoying the comfort.
“So, how about we go do something fun together to forget all about this?” Nelliel asked abruptly, bringing her other arm around and holding a bouquet of chocolate roses in front of Orihime’s face. “What do you say, Hime-chan?”
“N-Nelliel!” she exclaimed, exasperation and laughter bubbling up in equal measure as she took the bouquet and shot her Hollow friend a look. “Did you plan this?”
Nelliel huffed and tilted her chin up and away. “I did no such thing. Either you’d get a date with your crush or you wouldn’t, and either way I won~” She grinned down at Orihime and ruffled her hair, laughing as Orihime yelped and tried to squirm away. “Either I got to each delicious chocolate or I got to cheer you up and eat delicious chocolate! How could I say no?”
“I see how it is,” Orihime said with a mock huff, trying to neaten her hair from the mess Nelliel made of it. Warmth settled in her chest, chasing away the chill of rejection, and her next smile was softer, truer than any she’d been able to give recently. “Hey, Nelliel…? Thanks…”
“Any time, Hime, any time.”
