It’s late in the evening when Kaito looks up from his book and realizes with a frown that he hasn’t sensed a senkaimon opening or Hanataro appearing in the Living World. It’s not like Hanataro to miss a scheduled visit, not when it takes so much paperwork to schedule one, and… it makes Kaito worry.

It makes his father worry too, because Urahara doesn’t take much convincing to summon a senkaimon for Kaito to dart through, racing down the corridor and into Seireitei without a backwards glance. He doesn’t stay to acknowledge the handful of guards stationed near the senkaimon, just shunpos past them and over the rooftops, honing in on Hanataro’s reiatsu.

He follows his friend’s reiatsu to a disused building on the edge of Seireitei, then to a small closet in that building. Anger curls acid-hot in his heart. Blooms into vicious, cold rage at the sight of the locked door. Ripples through his veins at the sight of Hanataro’s tear-stained face.

Kaito swallows back his fury when Hanataro flinches back. Kneels in front of Hanataro and gently brushes away his friend’s tears, tugging him into a careful hug.

Plans his revenge even as Hanataro curls into him and sobs.
